Case Study - MOOD LIGHTING AT HERNE HILL LIFESTYLE CENTRE Trusol

The requirement

This brand-new leisure facility is a unique and ambitious project by the London Borough of Lambeth, constructed in a specially enlarged section of the former cellar spaces underneath Herne Hill Carnegie Library, a popular landmark and Grade II listed building.
Inside there is a compact high-specification gym with functional training and group exercise facilities, however the construction challenges left few walls and other spaces for the operator’s motivational artwork and décor and so the grey and white theme and bright white lighting meant the space felt clinical and somewhat uninspiring.

Our solution

Specialist lighting can be used very effectively to add atmosphere to small spaces, but design, deployment and colour selection are the key elements for success. Trusol considered each of the areas and their intended use, and looked into a range of products which would add something inspiring to the space without creating distraction.
Colour changing LED strips with the correct diffusion and power ratings were specified in three areas. They have integrated covers which cast and lightly diffuse the light, and come with discreet wall mounted controllers for selecting colour and brightness and additionally creating simple colour changing sequences.

Results

The spaces are transformed by a simple piece of effect lighting – with the right colours and intensity, a background mood is set which helps gym users concentrate and keep up their motivation.
The systems are discreetly and professionally installed and can be controlled by staff when needed.
Each of the workout areas has a different colour and these are themed around the activities, such as cardio vascular, functional or HIIT training.
Installation costs were low and energy consumption of LED lighting is minimal, providing a cost-effective solution which is long lasting, fit for purpose and adaptable.
